Flexitarian is the people who are vegetarian but also eat meat and fish occasionally. They mostly follow a vegetarian diet but also like to have meat and fish at times, for health benefits.

How come the word ‘flexitarian’?

This word has been around for quite a while; vegetarians highly criticize it though. However, the word became popular in 2008 with the publication of the book The Flexitarian Diet by a dietitian Dawn Jackson Blatner.

Why occasional meat?

People who call themselves flexitarian eat meat occasionally due to two reasons:

  • For health reasons
  • For environmental reasons

When it comes to health, people suffering from different diseases are asked to stop taking red meat in their diets. For example, people who have heart diseases and have already been through angiographies or bypass are strictly stopped from eating beef.

Environmental reasons take into account environmental protection. Flexitarians are really strict about environments, and so, they eat only free-range i.e., organic animals and animal products.

How often do flexitarians take meat?

Well, as there is no standard definition of flexitarian, there is no specific amount or frequency of eating meat.

This depends on the person whether he wants to take meat once a week or twice a week.

There are no clear cut rules of the diet flexitarians take. There is no specific amount of calories, micronutrients, or macronutrients. However, there are some general principles of the diet:

  • Prefer and mostly eat fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and legumes.
  • Get proteins from plants and not animals.
  • Show some flexibility and incorporate meat into your meals from time to time.
  • Limit preservative sugars and sweets.
  • Eat natural food, mostly.
  • Avoid processed food.

All of this makes up a flexitarian!
